From Caps & Gowns to Cycling the Open Road
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1987, Steven Dombrowski and his roommate embarked on a celebratory adventure. Together, the two young men flew out to Portland, OR with their bicycles in tow. The goal was to travel from Portland to San Diego — a journey of over 1,500 miles! Cycling along the coast, Dombrowski kept a detailed log of the adventure. In his daily diary, he took note of the route’s terrain, detailed by a comprehensive California Bike Map. An all around outdoor adventure, the college grads ditched hotel accommodations in favor of camping at coastal parks. Over the course of 40 days, the two cyclists embraced their ride along Route 1 — a ride that would make for quite the memorable experience!
Over three decades later, Steven Dombrowski’s love of cycling is just as strong as ever. In fact, it’s perhaps stronger now that he has intertwined the sport with his cancer awareness advocacy. Year-round, Dombrowski trains to participate in charitable cycling competitions.
Marathon Training
Always on the go, Steven Dombrowski considers himself to be an active and athletic individual. Outside of his cycling, he is also an avid runner. Although he enjoys kicking off the day with a morning jog, running is more than just a pastime for Dombrowski — it’s one of his greatest passions. He credits his vitality and good health to his passion for marathon training, an activity he has kept up since he was young. Locally, this marathon enthusiast has participated in Bank of America’s Advocate Health Care International 5K. He aims to continue this tradition.
In the coming year, Steven Dombrowski is prepared to kick up the heat and put on the pressure! This time, he hopes to travel cross country, participating in various cancer awareness marathons along the way. In the future, he will document his cycling and marathon training activities in the form of a blog that will tie together his passions of athleticism and advocacy.
